TACAMO & the Blues

It may not be well known that the relationship between big wing, niche mission TACAMO, and Naval Aviation mainstream, the forefront of excellence in precision flying goes way back. For CERTAIN with CDR Jack “Rico” Keilty flying in his second year as Blues Number Two, that relationship is well-known and close. Irish and Rico have put together a string of really cool events for TACAMO veterans with the Blues and their demanding tour schedule. Rico told a group of us as such an event in Seattle, “You guys are like my family, the ones I learned from as a kid, the ones whose dedication to the Navy and each other that have helped me reach this service opportunity.”

I flew in aircraft BUNO 149806 while it was in TACAMO Component . We used it when we shifted TACAMO boxes from either BUNO 151888 or 151889 in order to send those aircraft to depot level maintenance. That airplane also a special mission in the fall of 1967. That airplane was outfitted with a special radar assembly mounted to the ramp door. The airplane, with our crew along with NATC engineers went to war fo approximately 2 months to test this unit.

See, the Viet Cong was spent most of their time underground. This aircraft was sent find them, using heat seeking radar mounted on the ramp door. It took a few shots and after 2 months, it was back…
